At Mammashop.dk, we believe that one of the more enjoyable aspects of becoming a parent is that you suddenly get to decorate a baby room/children's room. This means that you suddenly have to think completely outside the box – because the idea of many different colors, stuffed animals on the walls, and a mobile with elephants is something you really left behind many years ago.
What should the children's room actually be used for?
First and foremost, it is important to remember that the children's room is for the child to play and express their imagination – and to a far lesser (if at all) extent for the parents' aesthetic sense to be satisfied. It’s about providing your child with an environment where they feel safe, and where they can play some great games – and it doesn’t matter if they take several days. As a parent, you might see the ongoing play as so-called “mess” – but you shouldn’t. You should rather see it as your child exploring the “world” in the form of the room and developing their creativity.
What should you remember when decorating a children's room?
There are many things that can be good to remember when decorating your child's room – and depending on how old the child is, it will of course vary.
Clothes in the children's room?
For example, it is not necessary for your child's clothes to be in the room – it will most likely only be necessary when the child is becoming a teenager. Until then, the space that a wardrobe would occupy can be used much better for play and activities – many games take place right on the floor in the children's room, and therefore a wardrobe would often be in the way. However, the picture shows a storage solution that we at Mammashop think is extremely elegant.
Children's furniture
Smaller children will find it fun to sit in furniture that resembles their parents' – but that is suitable for them in size. Therefore, it may be a good idea to buy some children's furniture for the room. At the same time, it can be a good place for the children to sit and draw, for example.
Neutral colors on the walls
Both children's furniture and toys will have many colors, and therefore it may be a good idea to keep the children's room in some more neutral colors. This creates calmness in what is actually a colorful chaos with differently colored toys, multi-colored furniture, and many other color impressions.
At the same time, one could, for example, paint one of the walls in the room with chalkboard paint. In this way, the children can contribute to the decoration of the room themselves – without either mom or dad needing to be upset about the wall being painted.
In the more colorful and vibrant suggestions for the wall, there could be a wall print/image of a forest or whatever the child finds interesting – a few examples of motifs could be Winnie the Pooh.
The picture to the right shows a neutral decoration, but where a pattern has also been used on a single wall to break the somewhat clinical impression that four white walls would create.
Light is important in your child's room!
The more natural light, the better – the more electric light, the better. It can be said so simply. That doesn’t mean, of course, that you need to go out and buy large spots and projectors for the room – but it’s a good thing for your child to have some decent light (preferably from several different sources), so that the light can be adapted to whatever scenario is taking place.
One day, your child might be playing a wild game where movement is the central element, and therefore the child doesn’t need that much light – while the next day your child might be sitting and concentrating on drawing, where more light would make it easier to focus.
As a main light source, for example, rice paper lamps can be used, which we can see is popular among all you parents who showcase the children's rooms on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
