Car seat rules – your child's safety

Your child's safety is important, which is why we at Mammashop also place great emphasis on safety. This applies throughout the home and in the children's room, but also in the car. There is legislation in this area to ensure that your child is safe when you are driving.

The legislation stipulates that you, as the driver of the car, are responsible for ensuring that your child is securely fastened. For children under 135 cm, they must be secured in approved safety equipment, including car seats and booster seats. In addition, the safety equipment must be suitable for the child's height and weight. 

Rules for children in the car

The responsibility for children in the car applies until the child is 15 years old. But from the very first car journey with your child, it is important that you pay attention to the rules that apply to children in the car. If you do not comply, it can have financial consequences for you, as it results in a fine of 2.000 kr and a penalty point on your driving licence. But it can also have serious consequences for the child if you are involved in an accident.

Approved car seats

Car seats must have a special ECE approval or an I-Size approval. I-Size is a new approval that came into force in 2013, but it is a valid approval for Isofix car seats. If you have a newer car with Isofix fittings, you can check whether it is suitable for all I-Size approved car seats.

All car seats that you find with us at Mammashop are approved according to the applicable rules, and you can therefore be sure that the car seat you buy from us meets the requirements. Isofix car seats

In your search for the perfect car seat, you may have come across the term Isofix car seat? An Isofix car seat is a car seat that must be fitted to the car's Isofix fittings. These are two fittings between the car seats, permanently installed as part of the car's bodywork, to which the car seat is fitted. This direct connection between the car seat and the car's bodywork provides increased safety.

However, it requires a car with Isofix fittings, and if you do not have that, you should not buy an Isofix car seat. It will simply be less stable on the seat. This is because Isofix car seats must only be fitted to the car's Isofix fittings and not to the car's seat belts. But it is precisely this type of installation that makes Isofix car seats particularly safe and also the reason why they perform well in car seat tests.

Benefits of an Isofix car seat

An Isofix car seat is quick and easy to fit, and it can only be fitted correctly. You will probably notice immediately if the seat is fitted incorrectly and dangerously. The easy installation is because the fittings are permanently installed in the car and fit the fittings on the car seat in a way that makes it easy to fit the seat correctly.

Another benefit of this type of car seat is that it is securely fitted directly to the car's bodywork, thereby increasing safety and protection of the child's neck and head. An Isofix car seat is the safest choice of car seat and performs excellently in car seat tests.

Forward-facing and rear-facing car seats – what should you choose?

As new parents, there are really many things to consider, including buying the right things. A car seat is a necessity, and first and foremost you need to decide which car seat suits your child. But you should also consider whether it should be a forward-facing or rear-facing car seat.

Both comply with the legislation, and the decision can therefore be based, among other things, on how much space there is in the car and your needs. But as a rule, it is safest to use a rear-facing car seat, as it best protects the child in a frontal collision. Several of our car seats can be used both forward-facing and rear-facing.

The right car seat for your child

Using a rear-facing car seat is safest for the child, especially from when they are newborn and during the first many months. For some, it may work for the entire period when a car seat is necessary, but due to the child's growth or the size of the car, it may be necessary to use the car seat forward-facing. 

The same applies to a car seat as when buying, for example, a baby nest or baby and junior beds. They must suit your needs as a family and the child's needs.

The first thing you can take into account when choosing a car seat is your child's weight. From there, you can look more closely at the car seat weight class that makes sense for you. In the different categories, you can then see the different brands, types and sizes of car seats and thereby find the one that best suits your child and your needs.

Our division is based on the manufacturers' and products' guidelines and weight limits. The different weight classes are 0-13 kg, 9-18 kg, 15-36 kg and 9-36 kg. So once you know your child's weight, you are already well on your way to finding the right car seat.

Car seat - age or weight?

When the child is around 3-4 years old, a booster seat is recommended. That age can be a good starting point, but the change should be based on your individual assessment, as it depends greatly on the child's growth. When the child is around 10 years old or at least 135 cm tall, most children will be able to sit on the car seat without a car seat or booster seat.

It is like the transition from nappies to toilet trainer or moving away from pacifiers. It varies from child to child. This also applies when choosing a car seat, but the child's weight can be a good starting point. The mentioned ages of 3-4 years and 10 years can be a guide for your choice.

What are the rules for using a car seat?

According to the law, all children under 135 cm must sit in an approved car seat when travelling by car. At Mammashop, all car seats are approved - simply choose a model that suits your child in terms of age and weight.

Car seat or booster seat?

If your child is under 3-4 years old, it is recommended that they sit in a car seat. This car seat may very well be rear-facing for the best safety. When the child is older than 3-4 years, a booster seat is recommended. When the child is around 10 years old (or 25 kg and at least 135 cm tall), they will often be able to sit on the car seat without using a car seat or booster seat.
