Breast pump

A breast pump can help get breastfeeding properly started, empty the breast of milk if you produce too much, or reduce the risk of blocked milk ducts and mastitis. Mammashop has a large selection of electronic and manual breast pumps for the price- and quality-conscious parent. The electronic one is for you if you need to express milk every day, while the manual one is for you if you only need to empty the breast of milk occasionally. Get advice and guidance at the bottom of the page.

Advice and guidance on buying and using breast pumps

At Mammashop, we know a great deal about breast pumps. If you have any questions about one of our products or about use in general, please feel free to contact our customer service. We stock a wide selection from many different brands. See, among other things, our selection of Mininor breast pumps, where we can guide you to the right one.

Manual or electronic breast pump?

There are two types of breast pumps – the manual and the electronic. But what is the right choice for you? It depends entirely on your needs. A manual breast pump is for you if you breastfeed your child and only occasionally need to express milk (for example, if your child is looked after once in a while). An electronic breast pump, on the other hand, is suitable for you if you need to express milk several times a day, either because you produce too much milk or because your child does not want to or cannot be breastfed.

How to prepare

Before you start Expressing, make sure you have plenty of time. Stress inhibits milk production. Once you can say yes to the first point, find a comfortable place and make sure you have everything you need within reach (for Example, drinks, snacks and a warm cloth). Then wash your hands and make yourself comfortable in the chosen place, sitting relaxed with Your shoulders at rest. Place a warm cloth on your breasts or look at your child to stimulate milk production.

The actual expressing

Moisten the breast shield on the breast pump so that it fits better.

Express at the (highest) suction strength you feel comfortable with – the secret to successful expressing is to stimulate the let-down reflex.

You should preferably express milk at least 6 times a day (both day and night) to make sure there is enough milk – the more often you pump, the more milk you produce.

Pump for between 10 and 20 minutes on each breast, or until no more milk comes out.

If the expressed milk is not to be used immediately, pour it directly into a clean, sterilised bottle and place it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Only fill the bottle ¾ full, and write the date on it so that you make sure to use the oldest milk first (in the refrigerator, milk keeps for 3-5 days and in the freezer for up to half a year.

Leftover thawed or heated milk must be discarded and must never be frozen again.

PLEASE NOTE: It must never hurt to express milk. If you feel pain, stop immediately so that you do not damage your breast tissue. Contact your health visitor or the hospital.
