Junior Beds

When your baby suddenly is no longer so small, it might be time to switch from a crib to a junior bed. The junior bed provides better space for the legs – and also the possibility to get in and out of bed by themselves. However, it may be considered that they are not quite independent yet, and therefore could benefit from a bed rail to help stay in the junior bed.

It could also be thought that the junior bed should be a bit extra high – thus allowing for play under the bed. With a loft bed, you get a junior bed that is a bit higher, where there is space under the bed – and at the same time, the loft bed allows for, for example, installing a slide.

The Child's Big Day - When Moving into the Junior Bed

When your child is big enough to move out of the crib – and instead move into their new junior bed – it should almost be celebrated. It is a big day for the child, as they are suddenly no longer a baby; but instead a child ready for new adventures.

Therefore, there are also many options when it comes to junior beds – precisely because the child is now suddenly big enough to have an opinion. What should a junior bed be able to do – and should it be this or that model? And what about the color of the junior bed?

It is suddenly no longer just mom and dad who decide – but there is also a little girl who wants her dream bed with, for example, a canopy; or a boy who wants to be able to use the junior bed as a safe base for his many adventures.

How old should the child be to move to a junior bed?

A question that many parents might have is when the child is big enough to be moved to a junior bed. At first glance, there is no definitive answer – but as a rule of thumb, it is said that it is a good idea to move the child from a crib to a junior bed when they start to stand up in – and possibly try to climb out of – the crib. This is because the child, in their attempts to crawl out of bed, may risk getting hurt – which is why it is advantageous to have a bed without bars at this point. It could, for example, be a junior bed; or alternatively, one could remove the bars from the crib, if one is lucky enough that it is possible.

The question then is, when does the child start playing escape artist. Again, the rule of thumb says that the child can stay in the crib until about 3 years old. However, this is not a definitive answer, as some children are so developed by the time they are one and a half years old that they start to climb up in the crib – and then one would of course switch to a junior bed earlier than at the age of 3.

Additionally, you may find that your child gets up to call for you – because there is nothing cozier than coming in to mom and dad and snuggling back in the bedroom. In that situation, it may also be advantageous to switch to a junior bed, so the little one can take their teddy bear in hand and walk in to mom and dad in the early morning hours.

If you are still in doubt about whether it is time for a junior bed, you can read our bed guide right here.

How long can you use a junior bed?

It obviously depends on the size of your junior bed – but a junior bed typically lasts until around the age of 6-7 years. After that, the child will have such long legs that it's time for a bed that is a bit longer (and thus typically an adult-sized bed measuring 200 x 90 cm).

There are thus both junior beds that measure 160x70 and junior beds that measure 200x90 cm. This way, when your child has outgrown the junior bed, you can upgrade to the next size up without the child necessarily having to compromise on e.g. colors, slides, or whatever exciting things and items there may be on the junior bed.

Can a junior bed hold up for several children?

If you choose to buy a high-quality junior bed, it can be used for multiple children. For example, you can buy a white junior bed that can simply be adjusted to your children's wishes over time – and thus it can be reused for a little sister or little brother when it is their time to move out of the baby bed.

This way, you can avoid having to buy a new junior bed for each child – but instead adapt the junior bed from the older siblings so that it matches the wishes of the child who will take over.

Furnish the junior bed with mattresses, bedding, and much more

Once you have found the desired junior bed, the next step is to find the accessories that will turn the bed into a place where your child can feel safe enough to sleep at night (right until it's time to go in and wake mom and dad). Therefore, in addition to the junior bed itself, you will of course also be looking for a mattress for the junior bed as well as possibly a cover (and maybe a waterproof sheet / bedwetting mat).

Cheap junior beds

At Mammashop, we have many cheap junior beds. Among them, you will find, for example, Hoppekids Basic and Hoppekids Ida-Marie beds. Both series are Swan labeled junior beds of high quality, but at a sharp competitive price.

Among our range of cheap junior beds, you will also find the popular house beds which, in a new-modern Scandinavian design, will adorn any children's room.

If you have limited space in the children's room, a mid-high junior bed would be an obvious choice. This way, you have the opportunity to play under the bed – either by building a fort or using the space under the bed to store the child's large amounts of toys.

If you need even more space under the bed and would like to place a desk, we recommend you look at the nice high beds – here you get maximum space under the bed, where you can sit upright at a desk and do homework, draw, or whatever you might wish. Perfect for starting school.

If there needs to be speed in the field and the bed should be used for play, you will enjoy looking at one of the fun mid-high beds with a built-in slide.
