A world of pacifiers
Should the little one have a pacifier? When it comes to pacifiers, there is a lot of information to consider. What kind of pacifier should it be? What material and what shape? There are many opinions regarding pacifiers, both from manufacturers and from objective experts. All children are different and have different sucking needs. This varies both in terms of how much the pacifier is used by the little one and in terms of what kind of pacifier it should be.
Sometimes a good number of pacifiers are purchased, only to find out that the pacifier is not a success with the child. We at Mammashop have selected some pacifiers that we trust and have good experience with that work and are more readily accepted by the little ones. Babies who do not get a pacifier may tend to satisfy their sucking needs on their little thumb, which is, so to speak, right at hand. It is difficult to wean a child off sucking their thumb, harder than weaning the child off the pacifier when that time comes, and therefore pediatricians recommend the use of a pacifier. However, if the child is not interested in either, they should not be forced to use a pacifier.

Should the child use a pacifier?
A pacifier is a good option to stimulate the little one's sucking needs, which go beyond just when they are breastfeeding and hungry. Babies who do not get a pacifier may tend to stimulate their sucking needs by using their thumb instead. The thumb, however, is harder to wean the little one from, as it is right at hand. Therefore, it is better to establish the use of a pacifier instead of getting the child used to using their thumb. However, if the child does not want to use a pacifier, they should not be forced.
When should the child use a pacifier?
Nowadays, the general attitude is that it is best to wait to give the child a pacifier until breastfeeding is established. Otherwise, there may be a chance that the little one's sucking technique on the breast will be slightly disturbed by the use of a pacifier.
Using a pacifier helps the little one to relax and calms them. This option should not be taken away from the little one. The pacifier should be used for comfort or to soothe. When the little one is playing, there is no need for the pacifier.
What is the difference between a latex pacifier and a silicone pacifier?
Silicone pacifiers do not age and therefore look more hygienic than, for example, latex pacifiers. Silicone pacifiers are a synthetic material that can be used by everyone. Silicone pacifiers do not emit any scent or taste and are therefore sometimes easier to take. However, silicone pacifiers do not withstand being bitten as much as latex and are slightly less elastic. Latex pacifiers are a soft natural material that quickly adapts to the shape and movements of the mouth. Latex pacifiers resemble the soft and warm nipple more. However, latex pacifiers do age, as it is a natural material and changes shape as the rubber expands. Therefore, the pacifiers should be checked for shape, cracks, etc.
Parents who are afraid that their child has or develops a latex allergy can benefit from using a silicone pacifier. Although the connection between the use of latex pacifiers and latex allergy is not entirely clear, it is a good idea to take precautions.
What type of pacifier should you buy?
There are many different types of pacifiers, both in terms of shape and material. It is most important that you choose the pacifier that works for you and your child. There are round pacifiers, ergonomic pacifiers, pacifiers made of solid rubber or silicone, and fun pacifiers with soft teddy bears or cute figures on them. Here, you should experiment or choose what sounds good until you find the perfect pacifier that fits your little one. At MammaShop, we have selected the pacifiers that we have good experience with and that are easy to use.
