Isofix is an international safety standard for car seats and the fixed installation of the car seat in the car, which connects the car seat directly to the car's body via a bracket. An Isofix car seat is installed directly by being clicked into the car's Isofix brackets.
It is a quick, easy, and safe way to install a car seat. However, it requires a car with Isofix brackets, but if you have that, an Isofix car seat is the safest choice. The bracket system between the car seat and the car creates a secure and strong connection that protects your child in the event of a collision. With Isofix brackets, you are also much more assured that the car seat is installed correctly, as it will be obvious if the car seat is improperly positioned.
Safety
One of the most important tasks as a parent is to ensure your child's safety. However, with constant development, various brands, and products, it can be just as difficult to find the right ones as it is to find a pacifier in a stuffed bag for an inconsolable child in a stressful supermarket – or to find the child's indispensable favorite toy 2 minutes before leaving for daycare.
But safety is especially important on the drive to the supermarket, daycare - or when you are going on adventures together as a family. As the driver of the car, it is mandatory and your responsibility that children under 135 cm are secured in approved safety equipment that fits the child's height and weight. Fortunately, there are many brands that can help you safely towards this, including Cybex and Britax Römer. Both brands have models with Isofix.
Why choose Isofix?
Isofix is a good indicator of optimal safety, which you should look for when purchasing an car seat for your child. However, you should only do this if your car has Isofix brackets; installing an Isofix car seat in a car without Isofix brackets has no positive effect. There are Isofix brackets in the vast majority of new cars.
But you should choose Isofix if your car has the necessary brackets because it is a safer car seat. Here are the following reasons:
- It is recommended by the Road Safety Council: "If your car has Isofix brackets, the Road Safety Council recommends that you choose an Isofix seat" (dk)
- It is easy and quick to install CORRECTLY. It will be clear if the car seat is installed incorrectly.
- Head and neck are optimally protected.
- The connection with Isofix brackets creates a secure, durable, and strong connection between the car seat and the car's body.
When you are going on a trip, it is therefore not the car's seat belts that have to try to keep the car seat in place, but instead two metal brackets that are firmly anchored in the car's body. It is easy to click the brackets together, thus avoiding incorrect installation - and your child's safety is increased.
Isofix – this is how it works
In newer cars with Isofix brackets, there are two metal brackets hidden between the back seats of the car. Matching brackets are located in the car seat, and the installation is done by clicking the two brackets together. Simple and easy! It is also this type of installation that significantly reduces the risk of incorrect installation.
However, we always recommend that you read and follow the instructions for the exact car seat, as different brands have different methods or special click systems.
Forward or rear-facing Isofix car seat?
The current recommendations in the area state that children sitting in a car seat should remain rear-facing for as long as possible. This is because it is the safest for the child, but applies in most models regarding what the seat is designed for.
But as with all other baby equipment, the most important thing is that you as a family figure out what works best for you and your child. A combination of a rear-facing car seat and Isofix would be the safest choice.
I-size approval
I-size is a type of approval that came into effect in 2013 and applies to Isofix car seats. To qualify as approved safety equipment, car seats must either have an ECE or I-size approval. Here, it is important that if you are looking for an Isofix car seat, you ensure that it is I-size approved.

Isofix car seat weight classes
When you are looking for the right car seat, it is always important that you, as a starting point for the purchase, have your child's weight, as car seats are divided into weight classes. This is because considering your child's weight can ensure your child more optimal safety. The most common weight class divisions, and therefore also the ones we use at Mammashop, are: 0-13 kg, 9-18 kg, 9-36 kg and 15-36 kg. In all the different weight classes, you will find several models with Isofix.
