Okay, summer has really come to Denmark and it doesn't seem to be letting go this year.
But maybe you want a slightly more adventurous destination than Bornholm? If so, we have created this guide on how to travel easiest with your baby.
It actually doesn't have to be difficult or stressful.
The secret is: Preparation!
(…as always…)
Of course, it's easier said than done, so here you get a list of things that are good to remember.
In bullet points. Because it should be easy.
Before You Travel
- Book tickets for early in the morning. There are fewer people at the airport and thus a greater chance for the little one to take a nap.
- Check in car seat and stroller together with the other luggage (with a stroller, you can shield your child from many impressions on vacation, consider buying a used one).
- Make sure to reserve seats next to each other on the plane, if possible. This provides more individual freedom. Otherwise, look for seats with good legroom, so there is space for the baby basket on the floor.
- Order a passport for your baby at least 14 days before departure and remember to check visa rules.
- Consider traveling to a destination where you have been before. This way, you can avoid stress about not seeing all the sights – that stresses your child too.
- Book the vacation for fewer days, so there is room for more luxury like room service or a balcony. With a baby on the trip, you will typically spend more time in the room than usual.
- Book direct flights as much as possible – this means fewer blockages in junior's ears.
- Discuss how the trip and vacation should proceed before leaving home. It is an advantage to have 2 adults, as the packing is larger than normal with a baby.
During the Trip
Bring some entertainment for the flight – and remember plenty of cloth diapers.
- Travel with empty pockets and without high-heeled shoes (as a mom), so you can go through check-in without letting go of your child to empty pockets or take off shoes.
- Pack a diaper bag with (cloth) diapers and change of clothes, in case of accidents. Cloth diapers have the advantage that they can be used for burping and as sunshades.
- Bring a baby basket and blanket on the plane, so your baby can sleep in familiar surroundings – remember a seatbelt as an alternative.
- Breastfeed or give a bottle during take-off and landing, so there is less risk of your baby being bothered by pressure in the ears, as the swallowing muscle is activated.
When You Arrive
- Have the means to pay for a taxi to and from the airport and from your hotel to other attractions, so you can avoid public transport – it's much easier and gives a different freedom.
- Check if public breastfeeding is allowed at the destination you have chosen
- Choose a hotel that is close to cafes or where you can get breakfast served. If necessary, take turns eating.
- If you are traveling with a partner: Then remember to find time to enjoy each other. Set yourselves up in a nice spot while the baby sleeps, hold hands and kiss <3
We hope this list has made it easier for you to plan a vacation with a baby. It is actually not that overwhelming; you just need to prepare a LITTLE more and pack a few more cloth diapers than usual 😉
Have a really, really great vacation!
