Heartburn
Are you pregnant and suffering from heartburn? Fortunately, there are good tips to be found in this article. When you are pregnant, you may experience heartburn because:
∙ The stomach's closing muscle is looser than normal.
∙ The growing uterus causes increased pressure on the stomach.
∙ Towards the end of the pregnancy, the baby pushes the stomach contents up into the esophagus. The stomach's closing muscle,
which normally keeps the stomach contents down, is looser and therefore cannot keep the stomach acid down in
the stomach.
Some pregnant women experience heartburn throughout the entire pregnancy, while others only experience it when the baby is so large that it presses the stomach contents and stomach acid up into the woman's esophagus.
The following tips can be tried if you want to combat heartburn:
Eat almonds
Eat almonds throughout the day because of their acid-neutralizing effect.
Eat smaller meals
Because the baby puts pressure on the stomach, there cannot be too much food at once. Therefore, it can be beneficial to eat a little less and a little more frequently. This way, there is less chance of the food being pushed up into the esophagus.
Elevate the headboard
It also helps to lie high with your head at night. This can easily be done by raising the headboard of the bed with a couple of books under the front legs of the bed. You can also use a large pillow to lift yourself up.
Drink low-fat milk
Drink liquids that neutralize the acid in heartburn. Here, milk is good because it is alkaline. Preferably drink skim milk or low-fat milk instead of whole milk.
Eat bananas
Eat foods that are acid-neutralizing. Here, bananas are a good option.
