As you probably agree, a child's safety is extremely important to all parents. But what does safety actually entail when it comes to home safety?
We have created a checklist with some of the most important points for creating a child-safe home. However, you should keep in mind that every home is different, which is why this list is only a guideline.
Therefore, you should also review this checklist with your own common sense – but the more points your home meets, the safer it will be for your child.
-
Electrical installations, sockets, and wires
- – Always ensure that all electrical installations throughout the house are secure.
- – The sockets should be child-proofed with socket covers.
- – Long wires should be fastened to walls and baseboards so your child cannot get their fingers in them.
-
Stairs
- – Install a stair gate both at the top and bottom of the stairs, secured in the frame. This way, you prevent your child from exploring the stairs on their own.
- – Avoid acquiring a folding gate, as your child can use it as a ladder and climb over it.
-
Dangerous items
- – Install a drawer lock that prevents your child from opening drawers with sharp objects.
- – Possibly place sharp knives in a knife block on the kitchen counter or on a wall magnet that is out of your child's reach.
- – Install a finger guard on drawers so that your child does not get their fingers pinched.
-
Heat sources
- – Place the kettle, coffee maker, and other large appliances at the back of the kitchen counter so your child cannot reach them and pull them over the edge.
- – Acquire a fireplace gate to reduce the risk of burns from wood stoves. This can also be used for the oven and stove so your child is prevented from turning on or adjusting the oven and cooktop temperatures.
- – Obtain an oven lock so that your child cannot open a hot oven or use the oven door as a stool.
- – Invest in a stove guard that is placed on the edge of the stove to shield your child from burns.
-
Sharp corners and edges
- – Install corner protectors or rounded brackets on sharp edges. This way, you ensure that your child can safely run around and play in the house – crawling around on all fours and being on the lookout for potential dangers.
-
Heavy furniture
- – Invest in corner brackets or furniture anchors to ensure that the furniture does not tip over when your child plays wildly or climbs on them.
- – Acquire a TV safety strap that prevents the TV from tipping over when your child pulls on it.
