Today, you can find a sea of baby gates in several different varieties regarding type, material, design, etc. In fact, there are so many different options for baby gates that it can sometimes feel overwhelming when you are looking for one.
But do not despair – we have tried to write a bit of information about the different types of gates, so you can confidently acquire a baby gate once you have read this post.
Enjoy!
Why you should get a baby gate
Specifically, the purpose of a baby gate is to block passage so that little ones cannot get through or near the “forbidden areas.” Therefore, it would be a good idea to get a baby gate as soon as they start to be able to move around at home – or actually, that’s not entirely correct. The most optimal would be if you are out in good time and acquire a baby gate before your child starts to crawl. This way, you will be ahead of the game and ensure that the little one does not get close to unwanted places and things.
How long such a baby gate should be used does not have a correct answer, as it varies from family to family. But once your child starts to crawl over the gate, it would be safer to remove it, as it will reduce the risk of the little one falling and hurting themselves.
In addition to a baby gate enhancing your child's safety, it can also help create a more secure and calm everyday life at home and not least for you as a parent. It is nice and reassuring to know that the safety measures you have set up in your home are safe for your child. Therefore, you will also be free from constantly having to supervise your child when they play alone in parts of the home, and your child will also get a sense of being able to play freely without mom and dad constantly keeping an eye on them.
Some may think it is a shame to “lock their child in.” But the good thing about most baby gates is that they are designed with vertical bars and with adequately sized gaps, so your child can still look out and follow what is happening. This also means that you as a parent will easily have a good view of your child.
Besides being a physical barrier and not a social one, baby gates are also easy to maintain and clean. With their simple design and child-friendly materials, a bit of liver pâté or mackerel is fortunately easy to wipe off, and the vertical bars free you from having to navigate around many difficult corners and edges.
Types of baby gates
One of the reasons there are so many different varieties of baby gates is also because there are many needs. Not all gates fit equally well in all places, but most gates can be adjusted so that they have multiple uses.
Many of the different gates have smaller features that some will value more than others – for example, whether the gate opens inward or outward. In the following sections, we will try to enlighten you about the most basic functions and precautions regarding a baby gate.
Pressure-mounted or wall-mounted gate
Most baby gates are either pressure-mounted or wall-mounted. A pressure-mounted gate means, specifically, that the gate is placed under tension in the door frame or between the walls. This type of gate is liked by many because you won’t have to drill holes in the walls. However, this type of gate is also popular because it can be extended to fit any door frame. This mounting feature also makes it easy for you to move the gate around and use it in multiple places in the house.
The wall-mounted gate is for those who need a permanent solution. The function of the wall-mounted gate is quite literally in the name, as it must be mounted in either the wall or the door frame with screws. Some may find it tedious to drill holes in the wall, but the advantage of this type of gate is that it is a long-lasting and durable solution that can withstand use for a longer time. At the same time, this type has greater flexibility and application options, as it can be mounted in slightly angled places or on walls that may not be optimal for a pre-mounted gate.
Stair Gate
Children love stairs, while parents fear them. Therefore, a stair gate is almost always found in homes with small children and stairs.
As mentioned earlier, there are many different gates in terms of shape and color. But aside from the design aspect, the gates are also designed for different locations in the home. Therefore, it is very important that you ensure that the type of child gate you use is approved for the place where you want to use it. The danger is that you may mount a gate in the wrong place, which can put your child's safety at risk. Especially, the gate around a staircase is very important to pay attention to, as it is not just any gate that you can use here. A gate with a crossbar at the bottom, which is part of the outer frame placed on the floor, is for example not suitable for the top of the stairs, as both you and your child could trip over it when you open the gate – and in the worst case, fall down the stairs.
Fire Gate / Playpen (2in1)
Just like with the stairs, the fireplace/wood stove is an area that is recommended to be child-proofed, as there is a high risk of your child getting seriously injured if an accident occurs. Here, a fire gate is a really good barrier for children. You can use different gates, but the characteristics of gates suitable for fireplaces/wood stoves are that they can cover larger areas or openings. This type must be wall-mounted and can be extended as much as desired, as it is possible to supplement with extra sections that can be purchased separately. In this way, this type of gate is very flexible, as you can “design” exactly the size of gate you need in your home.
However, the fire gate serves multiple functions, as the larger variants can also be used as a playpen. If you are interested in being able to cook in the kitchen while also keeping company with and keeping an eye on the little one, a playpen might be something for you. The fire gate can be transformed into a playpen simply by assembling it, creating space for the little one in the middle.
With some of these types, a play mat is included, which makes it more comfortable for your child to sit and play. But you can of course also just add a mattress or a thick rug yourself, along with some decorations, and thereby create a cozy oasis for your child.
Travel Gate
If you are going to travel or if the little one is just going for a weekend visit at the grandparents, a travel gate would be perfect for you. This type of gate is pre-assembled like many others, which makes it easy to set up and take down.
Most travel gates are made of a metal frame with fabric around it, which makes it easy to fold up so it takes up no space. The foldable feature also makes it easy to transport from place to place.
Materials and Colors
Although your child's safety undoubtedly comes first, you can't help but cringe at the thought of a metal gate placed in the middle of your home – how could it ever look good with the rest of the decor?
But don’t worry! The various child gates come in several types of materials and colors. Most gates are produced in either metal or wood, where the colors are often kept in muted tones like white, black, or wood-colored. This way, you can easily acquire a gate that can harmonize with the rest of the decor in your home.
